Department of Economics

The Department of Economics, University of Calicut started functioning in October 1976 at Dr. John Matthai centre, Thrissur, as a satellite centre of the University of Calicut.  It is beautifully situated in a quiet spot at Laloor, a suburban Village, five kilometers from the heart of Thrissur. The 18 - acre sylvan, pristine, pollution free campus belonged to Dr. John Matthai, the legendary figure in the world of high finance and one of India’s most famous sons.  Dr. John Matthai’s decision to donate the plot posthumously and actualized by his wife, late Achamma Matthai enabled the University to start a Centre for Teaching and Research in Economics.  The Department of Economics was opened at the Dr. John Matthai campus under the headship of Dr. M. A. Oommen. The fifth plan UGC Visiting Committee, which recommended the establishment of the Department, had made the suggestion that it should be developed into a Centre of Sustainable Development and this remains the guiding principle in the programmes of the Department. From the beginning itself, it was decided that teaching and research should go hand in hand. The Department of Economics is one of the major teaching and research departments of the University of Calicut, which offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses in Economics, besides the Postgraduate courses - M.A. Economics and M.A. Financial Economics. The Department has always been at the forefront of academic achievements ever since its inception. At Present, the Department has 52 M.A Students, 01 M.Phil student and 47 Ph.D Research Scholars (29 Full-time and 18 Part-time). A large number of students have made their mark as reputed economists and occupy top positions in international and national institutions including The Cambridge University, IIT, IIM, NIBM, IGIDR, TISS etc.
